Funders: support charity sector infrastructure or lose it, and lose out

Last month, the Directory for Social Change (DSC) published their reflections on what the “decline in infrastructure organisations” means for wider civil society – “have you ever heard of someone providing a donation for ‘good financial management’? How about for ‘compliance with regulation?’ Probably not. But if those things go wrong, so does the ‘front line’”. DSC proposes four ideas for what funders can do to tackle the problem:

  1. Fund infrastructure organisations to provide support in key areas.
  2. Fund infrastructure organisations to support underserved groups.
  3. Think about adding a development premium on top of your grant.
  4. Keep commissioned work in the sector.
