UK Grantmaking 2025 Launches

The second edition of UK Grantmaking – the definitive annual publication on grant funding in the UK – was launched in June, providing a comprehensive overview of who makes grants across all funding sectors – Government, Trusts and Foundations, National Lottery distributors, Donor-Advised Funds, and Charities.

Charity Times led the news with the headline that the government is no longer the largest source of income to the charity sector. (Actually, the real story is that trusts and foundations are the largest source of grant income to the charity sector. Government remains the main provider of contract income). Even so, as the bucket of Government funders includes lottery distributors, this is a significant philanthropy milestone.

The figures for 2023-24 were as follows:

  • Trusts and Foundations funding £8.2bn
  • Donor Advised Funds £2.1bn
  • Grants from central government £4bn
  • Lottery distributors £2.4bn
  • Grants from local and devolved organisations £1bn

UKGrantmaking is a free, interactive platform that collates and analyses information on grants made during the most recent year when published statutory accounts information was available. UKGrantmaking allows funders, sector bodies, policymakers, researchers, fundraisers, and sector media to access valuable data about the state of UK grant making in one place. The latest edition looks at data from 2023-24, and analyses data published using the 360Giving Data Standard to understand the grants and recipients.

Findings in this edition show that more than 14,000 grant makers collectively gave over £23 billion in grants in 2023-24 – a 7% increase compared to the previous year.

You can explore all the data and insights with interactive visualisations, sortable and downloadable tables, commentary and analysis from 360Giving and partners, as well as blogs with perspectives from our partners on the grant funding in 2023-24.
