Discover how funders are using Social Value to understand and demonstrate impact.
Social Value looks at the social, economic and environmental benefits delivered by a business, contract, or grant, such as improved wellbeing, stronger communities, reduced inequality and sustainability. It has been used in procurement for many years and is now being used by grant funders, including members of Yorkshire Funders.
Social Value measurement uses structured methodologies, (like the Social Value Engine which East Riding of Yorkshire Council uses),to quantify the benefits projects funded bring to the local community, often assigning financial proxies to non-financial benefits.
Other social value frameworks include:
Social Value UK – not a funder, it partners with UK grantmakers (including National Lottery) to provide training, tools and standards to help embed social value methodologies.
HACT’s UK Social Value Bank – used by charities to monetise individual wellbeing improvements and state savings with standardised metrics.
Social Value Portal’s TOM System (TM) – adopted by public and private-sector funders and suppliers for measuring social value.
Impact Evaluation Standard by Thrive – used by public agencies like HMRC, The Cabinet Office and The NHS, along with private-sector partners including Kier, Mitie and Capita.
