Modern Grantmaking: Improving the Funder-Applicant Experience

  • Offices of Brewin Dolphin, Leeds, LS1 4AN
  • 11 September 2025
  • 10-3.30pm

Hosted by Gemma Bull and Tom Steinberg from Modern Grantmaking, this workshop is for grantmakers who work for all types of funding organisation and who want to understand their own impact and do grantmaking better.

Modern Grantmaking is a consultancy and training organisation, focused on the needs of people who work within funding organisations, whether private, government or corporate. They offer a range of values-based advisory services, as well as training.

Their 2021 book, “Modern Grantmaking: A Guide for Funders Who Believe Better is Possible” has been hailed as “a handbook for grantmakers”, “an essential guide for all those who want to do grantmaking better”, and “brilliant, practical and funny.”

During this training, you will:

  • Become familiar with a range of avoidable problems grantseekers and grantees can experience when trying to use grantmaking services and systems
  • Develop an understanding of how accessible grantmaking services are driven by certain values and working practices, more than technologies
  • Learn about what the discipline of ‘service design’ is and how it can help grantmakers, including those trying highly participative forms of awarding
  • Acquire familiarity with useful tools and techniques for improving experiences within the grantmaking sector
  • Get feedback on specific grantseeker and grantee experience challenges that you are facing with grantmaking peers, and work on these collaboratively, supported by Gemma and Tom

By the end of the sessions, each participant will have a small set of clear, relevant service experience improvements, ready to take away and work on. It will involve some group teaching, individual interactive sessions and small-group sessions.
